Known as the "boogey man" as one of the toughest fighters in the league, Boogaard dropped the gloves 61 times during his NHL career for six years.
The culmination of the first year with the Rangers Boogaard has been the goal against the Washington Capitals on Nov. 30 to a scoring drought of 234 games:
Minnesota Star Tribune's Michael Russo approached Boogaard former teammate Niklas Backstrom Wild (notes) to hear the news:
"I can not describe it," said goalie Niklas Backstrom, who was sitting two meters wild Boogaard in the locker room for four years. "It is really difficult. Type of Unreal. A great friend and a teammate fantastic. Just a big teddy bear. Off the trail, not wanting to hurt anyone."
According to the New York Daily News, the Minneapolis medical examiner did not suspect a crime and an investigation is underway. The autopsy results will not be known for several weeks.
