It is time for the recovery of the Skyland Conference Golf Tournament on Thursday.Montgomery High School quartet avenged their playoff loss a blow to Hunterdon Central in this event last year, reversing the power Red Devils by two strokes to win the title of the team. And the second Watchung Hills took top honors with Lucas Graboyes individual race with a birdie on the 18th hole, three weeks after a bogey on the same site cost him a victory in the county of Somerset.
The team competition was particularly intense at the same Neshanic Valley Golf Club-72. The top four squads finished within three strokes. Montgomery was recorded at 313,
with Hunterdon Central (315), Watchung Hills (316) and Ridge (316) in the fight.
"It's been a long wait for that day," said coach Joe Montgomery Bassford. "We were excited to come back here and get rid of the feelings I had last year."
Senior Brian Motherway (74), junior Tom Yarson (76), senior Zach Miller (81) and second Steve Altieri (82) Cougars won their first crown since 2005 Skyland program and fourth overall.
"We will have a banner in the gym," said Miller. "I'll always be there. Nobody can remove it. "
To Hunterdon Central, which came as the firm favorite, the score was made by Ernie Renda (76), Greg Simonds (78), Chad Hunt (78) and Luis Bodine (83).
Before the first tee Bassford reminded his players of problems last spring at the hands of the Red Devils.
"They are a great team, but I always thought that every year they were there with them," said Miller. "It's great to get revenge, and it is good to come out on top."
Graboyes knows the feeling. In the tournament last month the county of Somerset, who had a one-stroke lead entering Motherway on the last hole and escape while they saw the first bogey and a birdie at the top level Montgomery.
This time Graboyes was pointed out again that the leading group was the final T - s. 5, 471 yards session on the course of the lake - and he was ready.
